Russian Maj. Gen. Yuri Kuznetsov was quoted by the state-backed news agency RIA Novosti as saying a cyberdefense unit will be ready "to defend the Russian armed forces' critical infrastructure from computer attacks" by 2017.
Cybercrime and cyberwarfare have emerged as national security threats in recent years. Websites used by Asian governments were targeted by the Anonymous cybercrime organization in 2013 and U.S. and Chinese officials have trade accusations about cyberespionage in recent years.
RIA Novosti reports Russian newspaper Vedomosti was knocked offline Thursday by a threat known as denial-of-service attack, which overwhelms servers with requests.
Alexei Moshkov, Russia's top cybercrime official, said cyberattacks last year on Russian citizens cost about $28 million combined. He said one person becomes a victim of cybercrime some place in the world every 12 seconds.
